Well, I'll be damned. Looks like someone is actually trying to accomplish a little something in the War on Some Drugs.
Stories I've seen don't fill me with optimism though. While any move away from the status quo is probably a good thing, anything short of flat-out legalization is probably a waste of time. Drug abuse has to be dealt with in the medical, educational and cultural arenas, not by application of law enforcement. Prohibition is nuts.
Just get the cops out of it. Downsize the incarceration industry. Shift the burden of drug abuse from society at large to where it belongs: squarely with the individual. Want to ruin your life? Fine, go right ahead, serve as a warning to others.
"Oh, the children..." Yes, I know.

It'll be nice for the people. It's a measure of freedom, but I don't think it will help control drug abuse. The only thing that will do that is for the state to take over the market completely. It will certainly cut down on the cost of incarcerating every Jose Blow who gets caught with a joint. Reducing cost and constraining the power of the police are important goals. The financial difference could be used to treat addiction.
